Interesting Information about the Triathlon:
Jim Desrosiers, Mike Toman, and Paula Lembke developed new plans for the swim and bike legs of the race, which was expected to increase safety. The swim to consist of four waves of 100 to 150 people seeded by time. Prior years were seeded by age, which caused some women to complain the men in their age groups swam over them.
The Race Committee and police representatives set up bike lanes and car lanes. Hunter Station Hill was cut out, and the race started one hour earlier to work around church services of the two churches on the course. The new course is entirely within Reston; generally has been three loops of Twin Branches, Glade Drive, Soapstone, Lawyers Road, Reston Parkway, Colts Neck, and South Lakes Drive; has been about 22.3 miles; and is easier than earlier versions of the bike course. There have been only minor variations over the years since.
Reston Triathlon ended the one-year run as the Tri-Fed Mid-Atlantic Championship race. It was deemed not community friendly. In the end, it remained a local event.
There were volunteer captains for all aspects of the race to cover food, water, and finish, to police, medical and packet pickup crews. Many volunteer sentries on the bike portion have been at their spots since the beginning of the Triathlon.
